So after reviewing and testing a number of Topo Athletics shoes, I was surprised when I received the UltraFly. They claimed to be a highly cushioned road shoe with some stability enhancements. What I found was a shoe that was far cushier than I anticipated and a true workhorse for those looking for a wide toe-box go-far shoe.

While the upper and outsole remain eerily similar to other Topo models (ie Magnifly), the midsole dynamics are quite a bit more comfortable. I had some fun in the shoe and look forward to many more enjoyable and durable miles to come. Really the only problems come with weight (at 11.5oz in my size 11, this shoe is HEAVY for a road shoe) and an interesting identity crisis. If this had outsole lugs, I wouldn't be saying this. It's a solid choice for a trail shoe because of the upper, the durability and protection, and the midsole cushion/protection/weight. It just needs more aggressiveness. As a road shoe, it seems a bit over-built and fat, reducing the fun and increasing the foot fatigue.
